Employment Tips

Below are tips on how to be successful when seeking employment.

Resume Guidelines

  • ALWAYS have a resume. Make copies and try to keep it on disk. If a resume has been sent to an employer to review prior to your interview, ALWAYS have one to present with yourself. It is a reflection of you and that that you are prepared for this interview.

  • YOUR RESUME SHOULD BE PERFECTLY SPELLED !

  • NO MISTAKES...NO EXCEPTIONS...SPELL CHECK IT !!

  • Keep resume to one page. If you' have skills in more than one area of interest, make a separate resume for each one unless they relate to each other.

  • Do not use colorful paper or fonts. Use one type of font with bullets and bold headings.

  • Never cross-out, write over or white-out typed information.

  • If needed, you may want to keep two or more versions of it.

  • Objective Statement: If you're not looking for any specific field  of work, keep your statement generalized.

  • If you provide a cover letter with your resume, make it concise and brief. One paragraph explaining who you are should be fine.

Job Hunting Philosophies

When looking for a job MAKE IT YOUR JOB TO FIND A JOB

Two secrets to finding employment are: PERSISTENCE & PATIENCE

Always: SET GOALS and DON'T GIVE UP!

THE RESULTS YOU GET OUT OF SOMETHING REFLECT THE EFFORT YOU PUT INTO IT.

Network! Build your own personal network. The more sources you go to the more you will find what's out there. For instance; News papers, Internet, Friends, etc. Spend some time walking up to businesses that do not seem to be hiring and ask about any available positions. Good information is sometimes acquired by what professionals call social engineering. The more you socialize the more you may find out good information............Give it a try.

Interview Techniques

FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE LASTING ONES - The Interview process starts with your very first contact with the company. For instance: When you go to pick up an application - ALWAYS BE PREPARED,

ALWAYS DRESS FOR SUCCESS, you never know if you will be asked to stay for an interview! People and professionals judge you on how you dress, your mannerisms and actions, and how you speak.

People notice the smallest things when they're looking at other people!!

Always practice questions on yourself, in front of a mirror. This cannot be expressed enough. It is very important and helps build con-

fidence and self-esteem. Anticipate what you think you will be asked and prepare an answer. Make up (5) good questions you think employers would ask you in an interview and have answers ready and memorized in your head.

Always send a thank you letter expressing your gratitude after the interview. Why? Because most people wont take the time to. Robin Sanborn of PacWest Telecomm has once said  "I would consider some one who sends a thank you letter over some one who has a better resume because that person took the time and effort to send me that thank you letter. It shows me that they are willing to put forth effort". Thank you letters are important. They put your head above your shoulders.

At the end of the interview ask questions about the company. Hint: The more your know about the company the better you will impress your interviewer.

Body Language and Dress

When you are sitting in front of your prospective employer it is important to be relaxed and to make good eye contact. Keep both feet on the floor hands and arms in a comfortable position, and sit up straight as possible. Or find a comfortable position where you do less fidgeting.

Dress is critical it speaks louder than words. If you  are interviewing for an office position dress like it would be your first day of work. If you are interviewing for an industrial position, make sure you at least wear nice pants, with a shirt tucked in, and wear a belt. Collar shirts are appropriate.
